four bolts on the back side of the starter. Only two of them need to be removed in order to separate the starter motor from the bendix gear housing. Two had hex heads and two were just Phillips head. The two hex head bolts need to be removed. Once the starter motor is out of the way you will find two more bolts holding the two half's of the bendix gear housing together. Remove those and then the bendix gear can be removed and cleaned. I also removed the solenoid and re-greased the piston/plunger. Other then that it's very obvious how everything comes apart. The mechanism lever that the solenoid uses to drive the bendix gear forward was a little tricky to put back together but only because I did not pay too much attention to it when I took it apart.
